Hi Darío, would you mind to introduce us to if , and tell about the project, history, members and where you’re from?
Hi to all the friends of Nucleus. if are four Italian guys: Franco Bussoli plays bass guitar, Paolo De Santis is the vocalist, Claudio Lapenna plays piano and keyboards and I, Dario Lastella, play the guitars, care about production and put in some electronic trick… We were a “regular band” some years ago, but life brought us far each other: nowadays no one of us but Franco lives in our home place (an Italian village called Petacciato), so we are something like a “virtual band”, even if we often meet each other to build up our music. Our project is to record and to spread the music we like and to reach as many people as possible… I could say that our aim is to reach the listeners’ hearts and minds all over the world.
Why did you choose the name if ?
if is the name of a Pink Floyd’s song from Atom Heart Mother. Only Floyd’s fans know it, but it has great lyrics by Roger Waters… maybe the lyrics that show better the essence of the artist. So the name wants to celebrate one of our favourite artists and symbolizes “the art of essence” that leads our music.
You seem to be influenced of many different kind of musical styles. Tell about your influences and the music from if ?
Everyone in the band has different musical heroes and tastes… so everyone puts something different in our music.
Franco is a bluesman and he loves solid bass lines… Paolo is an American-rock oriented vocalist and he’s an actor (he actually dubs American movies for the Italian TV), so he likes this kind of interpretation. Claudio is strongly influenced by The Beatles work and from Queen, and he likes jazz. And I am a big Pink Floyd fan and I guess I show it in my song-writing… Anyway I love Genesis too (Uneasy sleep Part 3 takes inspiration from Apocalypse in 9/8… at least for the tempo chosen!), but I don’t listen just prog: I like many styles (including funk, jazz, reggae, etc.) and all these elements get together in our musical style.
“The Stairway” is the first if album, can you give a description of the music on the album, and tell a bit about the concept story?
Well, “The Stairway” is the first properly produced if album (and the first one people can buy), but it’s not our first work. You can download for free our two previous albums “In the cave” and “if” from our web. The success on the web of the songs of our previous works (the ballad “I wish” topped the Classical chart of IACmusic.com for two months and we received some nomination for the Independent Artists Company Awards) convinced us to make a more elaborate work that could be available for general public on CD (you can find it on http://cdbaby.com/cd/ifsounds ). “The Stairway” is a prog trip through dreams and nightmares: The Traveller begins a trip in his mind to find The Stairway to Wonderland. But he must go to the root of his pain to find the way to the Stairway. The Wizard of the Dreams will lead him is this difficult trip… but everything and every single character is just a part of himself: the Stairway of Wonderland is inside of him, not outside. We could say that’s a psychological drama through mind and soul… maybe inspired in Kant’s works some way. The music is mainly prog rock, but it follows the mood of the story, with experimental parts, rock moments and more melodic moments, until the final catharsis.
Can you give a short introduction to each song on the album?
“Close your eyes” is a lullaby: the Traveller comes back home and goes to bed where (he thinks) that his problems won’t follow him… at least till the morning comes. “Uneasy sleep part 1” is a shock: the Traveller falls into the dream (or nightmare) spiralling down to a new dimension.
“The Stairway” is when the trip begins: the Traveller meets the Wizard of the Dreams.
“Uneasy sleep part 2” is the nightmare: an experiment with sounds and moods.
“Where have you been” analyzes the Traveller relationship with his father: there was no communication between them. Musically it’s half funky rock and half psychedelic…
“Like a bird” is a four parts composition that is about the need for freedom, with rock and melodic parts.
“Missing” is a strong funk rock and it’s about childhood’s end, when you lost all your friends: we have grown and everyone had to do his life… so we miss each other (maybe it could be about our band… but I wrote it many years ago!).
“Uneasy sleep part 3” is the end of the nightmare: it’s a prog rock in 9/8.
“It’s just me” maybe is the climax of the album: the Traveller was searching for Wonderland, but he found his miseries, the roots of his pains…
“Find your way” is the end of the story: the Wizard of the Dreams takes the Traveller and shows him the Stairway… Wonderland is inside of us and we have to find it in the happiest moments of our lives.
Your cover artwork is really nice! Is there a connection between the artwork and the title on the album?
It’s a great work by our friend Andrea Pinti. He shows me his drawing and I saw a connection between the artwork and the concept of the album: the big character could be The Wizard of the Dreams and the smallest one the Traveller, but they’re actually the same person… And the metaphysical environment of the drawing represents perfectly the dreamy mood of the music.
Who write the lyrics and music? All you are involved in the creative process?
Words and music are generally written by me, except “Like a Bird” written by Claudio and “Uneasy sleep part 2” written by Claudio and me. But everyone is part of the creative process: every musician is involved in the arrangement of the songs and the ideas of all make them work and grow.
Tell about the recording and production of the album, and maybe you have funny story to tell from these happenings?
Well, recording was quite simple and fast: there are many songs that we wrote many years ago and that we have played many times. We recorded almost everything all together in Italy last summer, then I took everything in Spain where I live, I ended up recording guitars and some synth and then I mixed all up. We were used to play several different styles of music, so our works used to lack of a definite sound. We tried to give a more definite shape to this work and I fought to give it the “right” sound. The most interesting thing was that I sent to my band mates the rough mixes and they guided me to achieve a better result. A funny story? Well, Paolo recorded the backing vocals for the song “The Stairway” and they were great, with a special alternative rock mood… but when I mixed them with the classical-prog-rock organ part by Claudio they sounded horrible… they would have sounded great without the organ, but I wasn’t smart enough to mute the organ… So I sent everything to Milan (where Paolo lives) and he had to re-record more conventional backing vocals… but he is still annoyed about it… and maybe he’s right!
How is the acceptance for “The Stairway” being? Do you think the album reached your expectations?
Well, we are quite satisfied with the album and the first reactions of the listeners are great: the songs are doing well on the Classic and Progressive Rock charts of IACmusic.com and the people who listened to it generally say that they like it… We’re promoting “The Stairway” among prog fans all over the world and we’re happy because we see how several radios and media are interested in our songs. Now we’re waiting for press and experts’ critiques, but I think we’re achieving our aim, we’re slowly reaching listeners’ hearts. By the way we always encourage everyone to contact us directly by e-mail ( iftheband [at] gmail.com) and to tell us what they think: we’re always looking for a direct contact with people and we want to create a relationship with our audience to improve our music.
How has the Internet influenced your musical career and the promotion of your music?
Probably if the Internet wouldn’t exist, if project couldn’t go on. We’re an Indie band, so we haven’t a label that could promote us and the only way to reach our public is the web… I often say by joke that there are thousands of if ‘s fans all around the world, but they already don’t know! Well, the Internet helps us to reach them.
You are an active live band? What is your most memorable concert with if so far, and is there a special moment from a concert you can tell about?
It’s difficult for us being an active live band: the last gig we did was last August, when we played some song in a festival near home and we receive an award for our music. It was very nice because we played unplugged and there were our families and friends. Maybe we had our best gigs when we played in hi-schools many years ago… but they were different times and we were a different band…
The future plans for if ?
Now we’re caring about the promotion of “The Stairway”, but we’ll start working on a new album soon… well not TOO soon! Maybe we’ll have a new member in the band in the future: we had contacts with an exceptional drummer and he said he’s interested in joining if . He’s more prog-metal oriented, so it will be interesting listen how he can influence our music in the future.
But this is not official at time, so I will not reveal his name now…
A last question. What is progressive rock for you? How would you describe this musical genre?
To define progressive rock as a genre is too vague: putting people like Genesis or Floyds or King Crimson in the same genre with Opeth or Dream Theatre is not completely fair… But there are a lot of people that call everything rock, from Elvis to Sex Pistols, from Yes to Marilyn Manson… I could say that progressive rock is a way to approach music, experimenting new solutions, new sounds or new harmonies. Prog is key to make the music “progress” over the classic rock’n’roll three-chords-song. But progression is not merely writing more elaborate music: take Floyd’s “Careful with that axe, Eugene”, it was just a chord repeated for four minutes, but they built a great theme with this chord! I think that the most important thing is to create an emotion and it’s not necessary to play difficult things, but to play “deep” things.

Hola Dario. Podrias por favor presentar a if contandonos sobre los origenes y la historia del grupo y de sus miembros?
Hola a todos los amigos de Nucleus. Los if son cuatro chicos italianos: Franco Bussoli al bajo, Paolo De Santis a la voz, Claudio Lapenna al piano y teclados y yo, Dario Lastella me ocupo de las guitarras, de la producción y de algún truco electrónico. Fuimos una band “regular” hace unos años, pero las circunstancias nos condujeron a vivir lejos los unos de los otros: ahora mismo solo Franco sigue viviendo en nuestro pueblo nativo (Petacciato en Italia), así que hoy en día somos algo como una “band virtual” aún si nos encontramos a menudo para construir nuestra música. Nuestro proyecto consiste en el grabar y difundir la música que nos gusta y alcanzar el mayor número posible de personas… Podría decir que nuestro objetivo es alcanzar los corazones y las mentes de los oyentes de todo el mundo.
Por que elegiste ese nombre?
if es una canción de los Pink Floyd que está en “Atom Heart Mother”. Quizá solo los fans de los Floyd la conozcan, pero creo que tenga una de las mejores letras escritas por Roger Waters, una letra que muestra la cara más humana de éste gran artista. Así el nombre quiere celebrar uno de nuestros artistas favoritos y además simboliza la “Arte de la Esencia” que está a la base de nuestra música.
Aparentemente tienes influencias de una variedad de estilos musicales diferentes. Podrias comentarnos sobre tus principales influencias y las de la musica de if?
Cada uno en el grupo tiene héroes musicales y gustos distintos… así cada uno pone algo diferente en nuestra música. Franco es un bluesman y le gustan las partes de bajo sólidas. Paolo es un fan del rock americano y es un actor y doblador… y eso se nota en su forma de interpretar las canciones. Claudio es influenciado por The Beatles y por los Queen y además es un apasionado de jazz. Y yo soy un fan de los Pink Floyd y creo que eso se nota en mi forma de escribir… Amo también a los Genesis (“Uneasy sleep part 3” es un homenaje a “Apocalypse in 9/8”… ¡al menos por su tempo!), pero no escucho solo prog y me gustan muchos estilos diferentes (como funk, jazz, reggae, etc.). Todos estos estilos confluyen en nuestra propuesta musical.
“The Stairway” es el primer album de if, podrías darnos una breve descripción de su música y de la historia conceptual del álbum, introduciendo las canciones del mismo?
“The Stairway” es el primer álbum en venta de los if, pero no es nuestro primer trabajo. Podéis descargar libremente desde nuestra página web nuestros dos trabajos previos “In the cave” y “if”. El éxito en la red de algunas canciones de nuestros trabajos anteriores (“I wish” llegó al número 1 por dos meses en la clasifica Classical de IACmusic.com y recibimos varias nominaciones para los Independent Artists Company Awards) nos convenció a llevar a cabo un trabajo más elaborado que pudiese ser disponible para el público en CD (lo podéis encontrar en la página http://cdbaby.com/cd/ifsounds). “The Stairway” es un viaje prog a través de sueños y pesadillas: el Viajero empieza un viaje en su mente para encontrar la Escalera de la Tierra de las Maravillas. Pero el tendrá que llegar a la raíz de su dolor para encontrar el camino hacia la Escalera. El Mago de los Sueños le ayudará en este difícil viaje… pero todas las cosas y todos los personajes son parte de él mismo: la Escalera de la Felicidad está dentro de él, no fuera. Podría decir que se trata de un drama psicológico a través de mente y alma… quizá inspirado en alguna manera en la obra del filosofo Kant. La música es sobre todo prog, pero sigue el mood de la historia, con partes más experimentales, partes más rock y partes más melódicas, hasta la catarsis final.
Puedes darnos una breve introducción de cada una de las canciones del álbum?
“Close Your Eyes” es una nana: el Viajero vuelve a casa y se va a la cama donde (el cree) que sus problemas no seguirán… al menos hasta que llegue la mañana siguiente.
“Uneasy Sleep Part 1” es un shock: el Viajero cae en el sueño como en una espiral y llega en una nueva dimensión.
“The Stairway” es cuando el viaje empieza: el Viajero encuentra el Mago de los Sueños”.
“Uneasy Sleep Part 2” es la pesadilla: un experimento de sonidos y sensaciones.
“Where Have You Been” analiza la relación del Viajero con su padre: no hay comunicación entre ellos, nunca la ha habido. Musicalmente es un tema en la primera mitad funky y en la segunda psicodélico.
“Like A Bird” es una composición en cuatro partes que habla de la necesidad de libertad. Alterna partes rock a partes más dulces y melódicas.
“Missing” es un funk rock duro y habla del fin de la juventud, cuando pierdes tus amigos: crecemos y cada uno va por su lado, así nos perdimos… y nos echamos de menos (podría ser una canción que habla de nuestro grupo… pero la escribí hace muchos años!).
“Uneasy Sleep Part 3” es el final de la pesadilla: es un tema prog rock in 9/8.
“It’s Just Me” es el clímax del disco: el Viajero estaba buscando la Tierra de las Maravillas, pero se encuentra con sus miserias, las raíces de sus dolores…
“Find Your Way” es el final de la historia: el Mago de los Sueños coge la mano del Viajero y le enseña la Escalera… la Tierra de las Maravillas está dentro de nosotros y la tenemos que buscar en los momentos más felices de nuestras vidas.
Su arte de tapa es realmente bueno! Existe conexión entre el arte de tapa y el titulo del álbum?
Es un gran trabajo de nuestro amigo Andrea Pinti. El me enseñó su dibujo y yo vi una conexión entre su artwork y el concepto del álbum: el personaje grande podría ser el Mago de los Sueños, mientras el pequeño el Viajero, pero son efectivamente la misma persona… Y el ambiente metafísico del dibujo representa perfectamente el mood soñante de la música.
Quién escribe las letras y la música? Todos están involucrados en el proceso creativo?
Generalmente soy yo el que escribe las letras y la música, excepto “Like a bird” escrita por Claudio y “Uneasy sleep part 2” escrita por Claudio y yo. Pero cada uno juega un rol fundamental en el proceso creativo: todos los músicos están involucrados en los arreglos de las canciones y las ideas de todos las hacen crecer y funcionar.
¿Dinos algo sobre la grabación y producción del álbum, quizás tengas alguna historia divertida para decirnos de estos acontecimientos?
Bueno, la grabación fue bastante sencilla y rápida: hay muchos temas que escribimos hace años y que hemos tocado muchas veces. Grabamos casi todo todos juntos en Italia el pasado verano, luego volví a España donde vivo trayendo conmigo todo el material y acabé el trabajo grabando algunas guitarras y algunos synths y luego mezclando todo. Normalmente tocábamos muchos estilos distintos así nuestros trabajos solían carecer de un sonido unitario y bien definido. Hemos intentado dar una forma más definida a este trabajo y yo he peleado en fase de producción para sacarle el sonido “justo”. La cosa más interesante es que yo enviaba a mis compañeros las mezclas de prueba y ellos me guiaban para alcanzar un resultado mejor. ¿Una historia divertida? Bueno, Paolo grabó unos coros para la canción “The Stairway” y eran buenísimos, con un mood alternative rock realmente especial… pero cuando los mezclé con la parte de órgano prog rock clásico de Claudio sonaban fatal… los coros hubieran sonado genial sin el órgano, pero no fui bastante listo para mutear el órgano… así envié todo a Milán (donde vive Paolo) y él tuvo que re-grabar una parte de coros más convencional… está todavía enfadado por eso… y ¡quizá tenga razón!
Como ha sido la aceptacion de “The Stairway”? Ha alcanzado sus expectativas?
Bueno, de momento estamos bastante satisfechos con el álbum y las primeras reacciones de los oyentes han sido muy buenas: las canciones están yendo muy bien en las charts de IACmusic.com y el disco suele gustar mucho a la gente que lo ha comprado y lo ha escuchado… Estamos promocionando “The Stairway” entre aficionados al prog de todo el mundo y estamos muy contentos porqué muchas radios y muchos medios se han demostrado interesados en nuestras canciones. Ahora estamos a la espera de las criticas de la prensa y de los expertos, pero creo que estamos alcanzando nuestro objetivo: estamos lentamente llegando a los corazones de los oyentes. De toda manera animamos todos a contactarnos directamente por e-mail (iftheband@gmail.com) y a decirnos sus impresiones: buscamos un contacto directo con la gente y crear una relación con nuestro público para mejorar nuestra música.
Como ha influido Internet tu carrera y la promoción de su música?
Posiblemente si no hubiera existido Internet el proyecto if no hubiera podido seguir adelante. Somos un grupo Indie y no tenemos una discográfica detrás que se encargue de nuestra promoción, así nuestra única forma de alcanzar nuestro público es la red… A menudo digo de broma que hay miles de fans de los if en el mundo, ¡pero ellos no lo saben! Bueno, Internet nos ayuda a encontrarlos.
Son una banda activa en vivo? Cual ha sido su concierto mas memorable hasta la fecha? Existe un momento especial de algún concierto que puedas recordar?
Para nosotros es bastante difícil ser un grupo live activo: el último show que hicimos fue en agosto cuando tocamos unos temas en un festival cerca de casa y donde nos premiaron por nuestra música. Fue muy bonito porqué estuvieron nuestras familias y nuestros amigos. Quizá los mejores bolos fueron cuando tocábamos en los institutos hace muchos años… pero eran otros tiempos y nosotros éramos un grupo bastante distinto…
¿Cuales son los planes futuros para if?
Ahora mismo nos estamos encargando de la promoción de “The Stairway”, pero pronto empezaremos a grabar un nuevo álbum… bueno ¡no demasiado pronto! Probablemente contaremos con un nuevo miembro en el futuro: hemos tenido contactos con un batería fantástico que nos ha dicho que está interesado en tocar con los if. Es un batería de corte prog-metal, así que será interesante ver como podrá influir en nuestro sonido en el futuro. Pero todavía no hay nada oficial, así de momento no revelaré su nombre…
Una última pregunta. ¿Qué es el rock progresivo para ti? Cómo describirías este genero musical?
Definir el rock progresivo como un género es demasiado aproximativo: poner gente como Genesis o Floyd o King Crimson en el mismo género que Opeth o Dream Theater es absolutamente incierto… Pero hay mucha gente que sigue llamando “rock” cualquier cosa, desde Elvis hasta los Sex Pistols, desde los Yes hasta Marilyn Manson… Yo podría decir que el rock progresivo es una manera de ponerse respecto a la música, experimentando nuevas soluciones, nuevos sonidos o nuevas armonías. El prog es la clave para hacer “progresar” la música más allá de los clásicos tres acordes del rock’n’roll. Pero la progresión no necesariamente llega escribiendo partituras más complejas: coge por ejemplo “Careful with that axe, Eugene” de los Pink Floyd, éste tema repite el mismo acorde por 4 minutos, pero sin embargo el grupo construye un gran tema con éste único acorde. Creo que la cosa más importante es crear una emoción en el oyente y para hacerlo no es necesario tocar cosas difíciles, si no tocar cosas “profundas”.
Bueno Dario, te deseo lo mejor para tu álbum y espero que mucha gente descubra tu muy buena propuesta de rock progresivo sinfónico. Gracias por esta entrevista!
